Shopify is good for online start-ups
After a complete run through Shopify’s free online access plus countless online review checks, I can say YES, Shopify is good for online start-ups especially with most of us who are efficient in using computers but not quite IT gurus!
Like everything in life, nothing is perfect, but Shopify’s online eCommerce software has, in my opinion, the two most important features; a fast hosting and secure product, important for any online business involving money transactions. I will list the pros and cons of why Shopify is good for online start-ups and can grow with you once you are successful.
What are the options?
Like Shopify, there are other companies like Bigcommerce who have similar pricing but according to some reviews might not be as ‘social media’ friendly and also do not have as many extra’s.
You might consider a ‘do it yourself’ website which is cheaper in the long run. You can download a WordPress or similar site and find the right ‘eCommerce’ theme. With this option you will have to pay to correct any issues that may go wrong from time to time. This can be quite expensive, a programmer normally charges at least 35€/$ per hour or part thereof!
You could also design a bespoke website. The initial costs are higher but then you own the site and pay just the hosting and occasional maintenance. This last option sounds interesting but take into consideration the way internet keeps changing and products keep improving. Your bespoke site would be stuck in today’s standard and might soon become archaic!
User friendly software:
If you are thinking of opening a web-store, Shopify is good for online startups. I highly recommend that you download the free version and give it a go! Believe me this is just what I did and in a few minutes I was already stocking my online shop. You can choose different categories with different product types, each product has an easy option to choose different variants like size, color or texture and the corresponding price to match. You have every tool you need from point of sale, stock ledger, marketing /SEO tools and anything important to conduct a successful business.
Not everything is that straightforward so if you do need help, they have a page full of FAQs, email/chat support and if necessary free 24/7 phone support.
Shopify is good for online start-ups since they offer an all-in-one solution. You are literally turning over this complicated side of your business to real professionals to worry about security and keeping out hackers, to organize your stock and to speed up things, sort out caching and all the other issues that come with hosting an eCommerce store
If you don’t know what caching means, it is something that can affect the speed of your website. Shopify looks after this and their hosting is really fast.
For every extra second that a customer waits for your store page to load there is a real risk that they may leave the website and try your competitor’s. Most studies show that customers will only wait up to 4 seconds for a site to load. With eCommerce sites, they tend to leave even faster!
Shopify is good for online start-ups especially if you don’t want to involve a web designer. The system runs off ready-made themes. It has free bundles to choose from and if you want a larger variety there are countless others you can purchase. There are so many plugins, free or against a small payment. All useful for the day-to-day running or marketing of your online store.
Most themes are responsive to different sizes, so you can work your online business from your ipad or mobile phone. Likewise, your customers can view and purchase your products from their mobiles.
Another reason why shopify is good for online start-ups and even large established businesses. It has blogging facilities integrated in the package. It is SEO tweaked, for the uninitiated,it is programmed in such a way that your products will automatically be found by search engines like Google and Bing, to help you to increase business. There is also a free plugin called Mailchimp which helps you collect customer emails and send different newsletters, brochures and any other promotional material.
Another reason why Shopify is good for online start-ups is that it comes complete with a payment gateway. True you could integrate any site with third party vendors but this might slow down your system. When Shopify integrates this payment gateway, you know that it is secure, hacker-free, fast and you will always get paid.
I would highly recommend you try their 14 day free offer. Considering the package, hosting and backup they offer, their pricing is pretty reasonable for any start-up or successful online store.
Spotify for start-ups starts at just $14/month ,this might be enough if you have only a few products to sell. For unlimited products, and a higher level of features the starter is just $29/month. The most popular and probably best value costs $79/month (if you already have an online presence and active business, this has better payment gateway terms). With a very active online shop, you might need to consider the larger package $179/month. If you are the next Amazon, then speak to them directly to get something even more tailor-made!
Shopify is good for online startups and will grow with you even when you are well established. It lets you focus on running your business with the knowledge that you have 24/7 backup when you need it. This safety net is important to me and I’m sure you feel the same way.
